The Importance of editing

As a writer, it is important to spend time carefully crafting your work. From articles to novels, blog posts, essays and dissertations, the effort taken to transform a blank page into a thoughtful and impactful piece of work is enormous. A captivated reader is the ultimate reward for a successful piece of writing. However, a vital step, if missed, will prevent many writers from experiencing this feeling of success. That step is the editing stage—the step to success.

The truth of the matter is that poor grammar and weak organisation of your thoughts will hurt your writing. However, editing can strengthen your writing style and improve the clarity of your ideas since the editing process will ensure that your paper is devoid of such issues as ineffective paragraph structure, grammatical errors, and inadequate content.

To some extent, we can all edit our own work. In fact, once we have completed the initial draft, we should review, rewrite, and reorganise what we have written. By doing so, we will be able to polish our thoughts and create a smoother flow to our work. Also, for those of you who are experiencing challenges at this stage, there are many online AI tools that can help you with editing. However, you should proceed with caution since you do run the risk of losing some nuance in your writing with these tools (there are just some things a human can do better than a computer).

However, once you have completed an initial edit, you really should consider asking a professional editor for assistance. As writers, some of us can become very attached to our work, thus we are not the best option to edit our writing. Therefore, for effective editing, it is best to get someone to cast a professional eye over the paper or document before you release it to the world.

A professional editor is going to help you achieve three main objectives:

      1. Create a great first impression. Poorly edited work loses the trust of your reader because it projects a lack of confidence and thoroughness from the                   writer.  To create a great first impression in your research papers, journals, dissertations, and essays, you need to get them professionally edited.

      2. Polish your work. As established before, it is difficult to edit your own work due to the innate attachment writers have towards their writing. Also,                          knowledge  of what you meant to say will prevent you from easily spotting errors and those errors will detract from the flow of what you have written.

      3. Ensure that your message is expressed coherently and concisely with logical arguments and clear ideas that will make your writing interesting and                      enjoyable to your readers.
